The union calls a strike vote when the collective bargaining process reaches a point at which the University administration is unwilling to meet the demands of the membership. A successful strike vote authorizes the union’s executive committee to call a strike if further negotiations do not produce an agreement acceptable to our members.
The collective agreement for APTPUO members expired on August 31, 2018. Since that time, we collected data to argue our proposals, presented our bargaining proposals, and bargained with the employer on numerous instances. In order for bargaining to move to a resolution, we need to convince the employer to take our proposals seriously. Obtaining a strike mandate vote an integral and normal part of this process
What this means is that your elected Bargaining Committee will take this mandate back to the bargaining table and ask for a better contract. If the employer refuses to budge, it is at that point that job action, including but not necessarily limited to a strike, could begin.
There will be a Special General Meeting on the question of a strike mandate vote beginning at 6PM this Friday, Jan 25 2019, in FSS (Faculty of Social Sciences) room 4007. At this meeting, the bargaining team will discuss the state of this round of bargaining with the University administration and give members the opportunity to vote on the question of a strike mandate.
Food and refreshments will be served. The vote will continue in the APTPUO office (UCU 106) Monday January 28 and Tuesday, January 29 from 10AM to 8PM. Please bring photo ID to vote. Members that appear on the seniority report are eligible to cast a vote. Votes cannot be cast by proxy.
